“Being in darkness and confusion is interesting to me. There is some sort of truth to the whole thing if you could just get to that point where you could see it, and live it, and feel it … It’s fantastic. It’s like a strange carnival: it’s a lot of fun, but it’s a lot of pain.” ― David Lynch
Life has a funny way of sorting things out so, naturally, you tend to go a little crazy sometimes. The secret is, that’s completely fine! You shouldn’t give yourself an even harder time because of it. Enjoy the ride. But remember, you need to get back on track eventually!
In the meantime, we’ve put together a playlist which should help you understand your state of mind and prove that you’re never the only one. You’re never really alone. And some have it worse than you.
From serious moody tunes to jumpy pop music, madness is a common trait amongst artistic types. They don’t say “mad genius” for nothing. Sure, sometimes you feel too much or think too much, and that can make you frustrated or exhausted, but at the end of the day, it’s okay.
Knowing the dark sides of life is part of living it to its fullest.
Ozzy Osbourne – Crazy Train
“Mental wounds not healing
Who and what’s to blame?”
This song came out in 1980 and though its lyrics can relate to feelings of distrust and alienation, they are specifically about the Cold War and fear of annihilation. Osbourne raises awareness regarding the manipulation of thoughts and information, though politics and mass media.
Alice Cooper – Balad of Dwight Fry
“See my lonely life unfold
I see it every day”
The best thing about this rock music masterpiece is seeing Alice Cooper perform it while actually wearing a straitjacket. The song is an ode to the actor Dwight Fry, known for playing numerous mad characters. The lyrics focus on feelings of loneliness and misunderstanding.
Joy Division – She’s Lost Control
“And walked upon the edge of no escape
And laughed I’ve lost control”
Joy Division’s Ian Curtis drew inspiration from both an epileptic episode he witnessed and his own demons of desperation. This song expresses exactly what its title suggests. The lack of control. Feeling powerless over your own body and mind and that chilling sensation of fear.
Cypress Hill – Insane In The Brain
“Who you trying to get crazy with, ése?
Don’t you know I’m loco?”
While this song speaks about being insane, it’s probably our most “innocent” entry. “Insane In The Brain” brings a fun touch to the idea of being confidently reckless, rather than actually mad. These guys just want to live fiercely, without accounting for their actions.
Melanie Martinez – Mad Hatter
“Tell you a secret, I’m not alarmed
So what if I’m crazy? The best people are”
Melanie herself stated this song is about “being okay with being crazy”. So what if you’re sometimes too spontaneous or you don’t entirely make sense? It’s okay to be different if you own it. Strive for the best version of yourself you can possibly be.
Pixies – Where Is My Mind
“You’ve met me at a very strange time in my life.” – Fight Club (1999)
The Pixies’ song became the theme of a cult movie about identity, morality, consumerism, dissatisfaction for a good reason. It was based on a simple scuba diving experience but it builds up an outer world experience for the listener, depicting the need to just step away from reality when it gets too messy.
Tool – Lateralus
“With my feet upon the ground
I lose myself between the sounds”
Most of the times, Tool’s lyrics are straight-on psychological studies. The message of “Lateralus” is that over-analysing leads to losing control. Just like Lynch, Maynard believes that life is purely random and we should embrace that. We are limited by mortality but entitled to divinity.
Halsey – Gasoline
“Do you tear yourself apart to entertain like me?
Do the people whisper ‘bout you on the train like me?”
Halsey highlighted some of the most unpleasant particularities of going off the rails. After dealing with too much pressure, the singer found herself insecure and irresponsible. She tried to compensate it with loudness and eccentricity, which clearly didn’t work out as expected.
Black Sabbath – Paranoid
“People think I’m insane
Because I am frowning all the time”
With depression, it’s hard to laugh or even interact with other people. Sometimes your feelings are pushed so hard that you start wondering if you’re even capable of having them anymore. You feel blind to the beauty and start thinking that everyone is out to get you. Then you become crazy because you have no purpose nor remorse.
Kat Dahlia – Voices In My Head
“I gave up and left my brain
In salivated pillow stains”
To end on a positive note, this song speaks about relaxing your mind. There’s always more to life and it’s healthy to step out of the routine and pursue your curiosities, even though you might not exactly like what you find.
