Ricky Martin Biography
Enrique Martín Morales, known simply as Ricky Martin, is a latin & dance pop singer, actor, and author. He began his music career as part of the boy-band Menudo. He released 10 studio albums. Most noteworthy, his debut English album, Ricky Martin (1999), is one of the highest-selling albums ever. In late 2016, he released Vente Pa’ca, featuring Maluma, again dominating the music charts.
Early Life, Menudo and Solo Beginnings
Ricky Martin was born in Puerto Rico, in a Roman Catholic home. He experienced the entertainment business ever since he was 6 years old by appearing in commercials. He was part of the band Menudo until his coming of age. The experience with Menudo helped Martin see the world and gain recognition. In 5 years, the band released 11 studio albums. After high school, he moved to New York. Furthermore, he took the opportunity of pursuing an acting career as well. He starred in two popular soap operas, Alcanzar una estrella II .and Más que alcanzar una estrella. In 1990, he signed with Sony Music. The singer released his first and second albums, Ricky Martin (1991) and Me Amaras (1993). Both turned out to be really successful on the latin charts.
Breakthrough, Crossover to English and Success
In 1995, his third album, A Medio Vivir, came out and received critical acclaim. It spawned the iconic single Maria and sold over 3 million copies worldwide. Moreover, his fourth album, Vuelve, generated another commercial wonder, La copa de la vida. Not only did it top various international charts but it also received platinum certifications. What truly made Ricky Martin an international superstar was the release of his 1992 English album. It was one of the top-selling albums of its time. With hits like Livin’ la Vida Loca and She’s All I Ever Had, Martin established himself as a powerful player in the music industry. Shortly after, he released another successful English album. Sound Loaded reached number four on the Billboard 200. It contained another extremely popular song, She Bangs and the famous duet with Christina Aguilera, Nobody Wants to Be Lonely.
