Katy Perry’s new music video “Bon Appetit” will ruin your appetite. That certainly depends on your tastes but the fainthearted should avoid this video. Nsfw describes it the best, so if you are at the office, tilt that computer screen until you’re the only one that has the eyes on it and grab a bite.
A New Pop Song to Conquer Charts
Teaming up with Migos, the California diva issued the music video for the song “Bon Appetit” on 12 May 2017. The song alone may very well become a pop anthem. In the same way your grandma tries to pile up as many jam and pickles in the storage closet when autumn comes, Katy Perry stuffs the lyrics with all the sexual innuendos she can, like “Hope you’ve got some room / For the world’s best cherry pie” or “Got me spread like a buffet / Bon appetit, baby”. The dance vibes combined with the edgy, carnal and slightly comedic lyrics are something that Perry excels at.
Thinking that you are what you eat, who wouldn’t want to be Katy Perry?
Some kids wanted to become firefighters when they grow up, some wanted to become doctors, some wanted to become lawyers. Apparently, Katy Perry wanted to become a piece of meat. No, that’s not an insult. She literally plays the role of a piece of meat in this music video. At the beginning of this clip, a group of chefs, including chef Roy Choi take Katy out of a freezer. Nothing more than a culinary rendition of the Frozen movie, so far.
The uncomfortable part comes when the chefs start kneading the singer’s body, like a giant, California gurl dough. A picture is worth a thousand words, but Perry’s facial expressions while the guys twist and drag her body in unpleasant ways are worth three Sandra Brown books. After covering her in vegetables, they start boiling her in a giant cauldron. Sceptics will pause the video and ask themselves why you need to cover something in flour before you boil it? That must be a step taken out from a modern cooking book’s recipe.
They bring her up in the main saloon where the guests are waiting to eat her. The deus ex machina of the Katy Perry new song are the guys from Migos. They start rapping and the chefs rebel against the guests and tie them up. Soon after, they serve the guests in the form of a pie to a Perry that just pole danced a bit because you know, exercise increases your appetite.
Bon Appetit Meaning
The controversial clip is directed by the group Dent De Cuir. They are best known for the critically acclaimed music video of DYE’s “She’s so Bad” and the perfect synchronised music video of “Drifted” by The Shoes. While the opinions about “Bon Appetit” dwell between exaggerated feminism ideals and cannibalism, Dent De Cuir’s artwork talks in the simplest manner possible about the way men treat women like meat chunks. The imagery is quite disturbing and the music video received several critiques that described it as “weird’, “creepy” or “uncomfortable to watch”.
Leaving gastronomy in the non-musical kitchen where it belongs, in other news, Katy Perry is preparing the release of her fifth studio album titled Witness. Set to appear on 9 June 2017, it’s known for now it will enclose the songs “Bon Appetit”, “Chained to the Rhythm”, “Bigger Than Me” and “Swish Swish”. Be sure to follow the album’s further journey and check the new Perry music video!
