The Persuasions Biography

The Persuasions are an influential a capella group formed in the late 60s. They were discovered by Frank Zappa and have released 28 albums. Additionally, they collaborated with major names from the music industry such as Liza Minnelli and Paul Simon.

Breakthrough & Frank Zappa 

Zappa took The Persuasions under his wing after hearing them sing over the phone, from a New Jersey record store, which belonged to the ensemble’s manager. The Persuasions already had a rich portfolio of a capella tracks, released through their manager’s label. Consequently, Zappa immediately brought them to Los Angeles and produced their debut major label album, A Cappella (1970). Later, in 2000, the group recorded a tribute CD to Zappa,  Frankly A Cappella.

Career Highlights

The Persuasions released numerous albums, both studio and live, as well as a few tribute albums. They moved from one major label to another, including Capitol and Elektra. The most noteworthy albums are their 1971 Street Corner Symphony and 1977 Chirpin’.

Moreover, they created tribute albums for the likes of The Beatles, U2, Bob Dylan and others. In 2016, the a capella ensemble performed with the Canadian pop group Barenaked Ladies and, furthermore, the group covered their 1972 major single Good Times. While they never charted really well, The Persuasions are a quintessential group in a capella history.
