Weezer Biography

Weezer is a Grammy-nominated alternative rock band formed in 1992. They gained success with their debut album, the Blue Album, which gained triple-platinum and spawned the successful singles Buddy Holly, The Sweater Song and Say It Ain’t So. After a period of hiatus, the group released the Green Album, in 2001. It spawned the popular hit Island in the Sun.

Early Years

Initially, the L.A.-based band, with its initial line-up, was a dorky group of boys, with a peculiar, eclectic sound. They used to curl up in the garage and play, whenever they had the chance. Therefore, their quirky humour made their first album, Weezer/the Blue Album, a total success. In 1996, they released their second album, Pinkerton, which had a darker, more serious sound. It didn’t instantly appeal to the public like its predecessor, but it was eventually appreciated as one of the best albums of its year. However, the punk-pop genre was getting out of style and so did the band.

Comeback

Dispatching any rumours of the band’s split, Weezer returned in 2001 with the Green Album. With a spring/summer background, the two singles Hash Pipe and Island in the Sun reached good spots on the US Alternative Songs chart. Moreover, the latter became an iconic hit, possibly the band’s best known. This was Weezer’s second most successful album, after the debut one. The third one was the 2005 Make Believe. Additionally, it reached number 2 on the Billboard 200. Weezer released their latest album, the White Album, in 2016. It reached peaked at number 4 in the US and spawned 3 singles. Currently, they group is working on an eleventh album, the Black Album. Overall, the group has sold over 17 million records worldwide.
