Portugal The Man Biography

Portugal. The Man is an American rock band from Alaska. The group has released 7 studio albums and eight, Woodstock, is due for June 2017. They are best known for their 2013 album, Evil Friends and its singles Modern Jesus, which gained almost 5 million views on Youtube, and Purple, Yellow, Red and Blue, which peaked at number 8 on the US Sales chart.

Formation & Early Years

In the summer of 2001, John Gourley formed his first band, Anatomy of a Ghost. Portugal. The Man appeared initially as his side project, however, it shortly became his only project. Three years later, the band started recording and touring the US. In 2005, after some line-up changes, they released their debut album Waiter: “You Vultures!”. During their period with an independent label, Portugal. The Man did not gain much recognition, except in 2009 due to the album The Satanic Satanist. 

At Atlantic Records

In 2010 Portugal. The Man signed with Atlantic, which proved to benefit their music. In 2011, they released In the Mountain in the Cloud, reached number 42 on the Billboard 200 and number 11 on the Alternative Albums chart. Additionally, it spawned a popular single, Got It All (This Can’t Be Living Now). One month later, the group released a short film titled Sleep Forever. After touring and performing at various high-profile festivals, the band came out with another album, Evil Friends. The record peaked at number 28 in the US and made a big impact in the rock music industry. Notably, it spawned some of the group’s most iconic hits.
