New Order Biography

The English rock group New Order encloses the members Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, Gillian Gilbert, Phil Cunningham, and Tom Chapman. Their style is based on post-punk, synthpop and dance-rock.

Early Years

New Order was founded in 1980 by Joy Division ex-members Sumner, Morris and Hook. They quit Joy Division after vocalist Ian Curtis committed suicide on 18 May 1980. They issued the album Movement in 1981. Those were hard times, regarding the fact they had to come out of Joy Division’s shadow. Trying to introduce dance music in their records, they issued the album Power, Corruption & Lies in 1983. For this album, they worked more with synthesisers than usual.

Further Career

Also in 1983, New Order released the single “Blue Monday”, on their most successful songs and an iconic hit. It charted at number one on both UK Indie and US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play charts. Until 2001, they already had released 8 albums, including Get Ready (2001). Waiting for the Sirens’ Call appeared in 2005. While recording it, many songs remained unreleased so in 2013 the album Lost Sirens got to see the light of day, enclosing songs from the previous album’s recording time. Music Complete (2015) saw an increase in critics’ ratings and it contained singles like “Restless” and “Tutti Frutti”.
