Nelly Kim Furtado is a Grammy-awarded singer and songwriter from Canada. Over the course of her career, she released six albums, with numerous popular singles, demonstrating versatility. She became famous in 2000 with songs such as I’m Like a Bird and Turn Off the Light. Furthermore, she had another success spree in 2006, with the album Loose, which spawned four number 1 singles: Promiscuous, Maneater Say It Right and All Good Things. In 2017 Nelly released the album The Ride, preceded by the single Cold Hard Truth.
Early Life & Career
Nelly began singing at the young age of four. Later she learned to play several instruments – trombone, ukulele, guitar and keyboards. Nelly cited punk and folk rock singer Ani DiFranco as her first influence. In 1996 the artist moved to Toronto and started a trip hop duo. However, she decided it didn’t fit her style not highlight her vocal skills. In 1997 she met The Philosopher Kings which helped her boost her career. Most noteworthy, they co-produced her debut album Whoa, Nelly!.
Whoa, Nelly! and Folklore
Nelly’s first album was a huge success, spreading the singer’s name all over the world. It reached number 24 on the Billboard 200 and generated three acclaimed singles – I’m like a Bird, Turn off the Light, and On the Radio. Additionally, the album gained a Grammy Award.
Moreover, in 2003 Nelly Furtado released her second album, Folklore, to a similar reaction. It generated two singles, Powerless (Say What You Want) and the heart-bending balladTry.
Loose
The highest peak of Nelly’s career was the release of Loose in 2006, produced by Timbaland. The singer herself described it as “modern, poppy, spooky”. The album topped charts from several countries and produced a series of extremely popular singles. Promiscuous marked Nelly’s debut at the top of the singles charts. Most noteworthy, Say It Right turned out to be her most successful song to date. During that period, Nelly also collaborated with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake for the single Give It to Me, another highly-broadcasted number 1. Additionally, James Morrison featured Nelly on his catchy ballad Broken Strings.
