Muse Biography

Muse are an English, Grammy-awarded rock band, formed in 1994. They have released seven commercially successful albums, with five consecutive chart-toppers. They are best known for their platinum-awarded hits Supermassive Black Hole, Uprising and Madness, and for their cover of Feeling Good.

Early Years & Black Holes and Revelations

The members of Muse met in college, but they played in different bands at that time. Eventually, they all connected and, after a goth-glam phase, they created the alternative rock band. After a few years of playing gigs, the group released their first, eponymous EP, in 1998. In 1999, they reached the indie chart with their second EP, performed at Woodstock and released their debut album, Showbiz.

In 2001, their album Origin of Symmetry spawned the critically acclaimed cover of Feeling Good. Two years later, Muse released their first number 1 album, Absolution. The four singles, Time Is Running Out, Hysteria, Sing for Absolution and Butterflies and Hurricanes, dominated the charts. The 2006 album Black Holes and Revelations marked the band’s international breakthrough, landing at number 9 on the Billboard 200. She singles Supermassive Black Hole, Starlight and Knights of Cydonia became some of the band’s most successful to date.

The Resistance & Recent Years

In 2009, The Resistance made a huge impact, topping the album charts in 19 countries. The critics loved the 3-part composition Exogenesis: Symphony, while the audience was hype because of the lead single, Uprising. Additionally, the next two singles, Resistance and Undisclosed Desires, also became part of Muse’s most representative hits. In 2011, The Resistance brought them the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.

In 2012, the album The 2nd Law spawned the double platinum single Madness. More recently, Drones, the band’s seventh album, won another Grammy. Drones is a concept album about the dehumanisation caused by automatism and indoctrination. It was the 19th best-selling album of 2015.
