MercyMe Biography
MercyMe is a Grammy-nominated American Christian music band, formed in 1994, in Texas. The group gained recognition after released their first album, the platinum-certified Almost There. Moreover, the released 8 albums in the following years and 13 number 1 singles on the Billboard Christian Songs chart.
Early Years
Before pursuing a music career, Bart Millard, the lead vocalist of MercyMe, wanted to be a football player. After an incident prevented him from sports, he began spending his time in the choir. Furthermore, he entered his youth pastor’s worship band. There, he met Bryson, the pianist, and Scheuchzer, the guitarist. Both wanted a full-time music career. Consequently, the trio moved to Oklahoma City to form Mercy Me.
Musical Development
The band’s debut album, Almost There, was a commercial success. It topped the Christian albums chart and reached number 37 on the Billboard 200. Moreover, it spawned the hit I Can Only Imagine, which peaked at number 7 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Both the single and the record gained 2x platinum certifications. After that utter success, the band released a chain of 7 gold-certified albums, 6 of which topped the Christian chart. Notably, 2010’s The Generous Mr. Lovewell, reached number 3 on the Billboard 200. MercyMe’s latest album, Lifer (2017), spawned a popular single, Even If. Overall, MercyMe gained 8 Dove Awards for their acclaimed releases.
