Maitre Gims​ Biography

A Congolese rapper and producer, Maitre Gims is also a French-based artist and former member of the group Sexion d’Assaut.

Early Life

Gandhi Djuna was born in Kinshasa, Congo on 6 May 1986 but immigrated to France with his brother. He rapped at college along with his friends and studied communication and the graphical arts.

Career Beginnings

He released material with his hip hop group Sexion d’Assaut while also working on an independent mixtape material called La Terre du Milieu. Maitre’s first album was revealed much later, as he was able to focus more on his own career. The 2011 LP Subliminal was brought to the attention of the mainstream with the hit single J’me Tire. The album was a success on the  French albums chart at number 2 and on the Belgian-French charts at number 1. The album was re-released in 2013 as La face cachée under Jive Records. Gims was able to create his own record label titled MMC (Monstre Marin Corporation).
