Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, better known by his stage name Lupe Fiasco, is an American rapper, record producer, and entrepreneur from Chicago. Initially, he actually disliked hip-hop music, considering it too vulgar. He encountered stardom in 2006, due to the success of his first album, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor. After that, he was consistent in producing top hits and acclaimed albums. In 2011 he topped the Billboard 200 with Lasers.
Early Career & Breakthrough
Fiasco began rapping in high school. He was part of a group called da Pak, which split up after releasing one single. Due to being supported by Jay-Z, Fiasco managed to enter the music business. He landed a deal with Atlantic Records and released several mixtapes. Additionally, he made an appearance on Kanye West’s Touch the Sky. Eventually, in 2006 he released his debut album, which peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200 and gained three Grammy nominations. The 2009 follow-up, The Cool, received similar success.
Lasers – Present
The already established rapper managed to release his third album solely due to the manifestations of his 30,000 fans. When Lasers finally came out in 2011, it immediately topped the album charts. Moreover, it spawned several popular singles, such as The Show Must Go On, Out of My Head and Words I Never Said. However, Lupe Fiasco began developing a taste for controversy. He received mixed reviews for his next two albums, Food & Liquor II and Tetsuo & Youth. In 2017, the rapper released his latest album, Drogas Light. The album is planned to be part of a trilogy of albums.
