LeToya Nicole Luckett, known simply as LeToya, is an American singer, songwriter and actress. She was a member of the legendary girl group Destiny’s Child, having released two albums with them. As a solo artist, she gained almost equal success. Her debut solo eponymous album topped the Billboard 200 and went platinum. As an actress, she landed the lead role in the 2010 movie Preacher’s Kid. Notably, she starred in VH1’s Single Ladies series.
Early Life & Destiny’s Child
LeToya was born in 1981, in Houston, Texas. As a child, she performed at her local church and took lessons to become an opera singer. One day, she met Beyonce in school and the two became friends. Eventually, Beyonce included LeToya in her band, Girls Tyme, which became Destiny’s Child.
She was a member between 1993–2000. She contributed vocals to the group’s self-titled debut album, from 1998. Furthermore, the group released their breakthrough, best-selling album The Writing’s on the Wall, which received an 8x Platinum certifications. It spawned the grammy-awarded Say My Name and other 3 hits.
Solo Journey
Three years after leaving Destiny’s Child, LeToya signed with Capitol Records. She released her debut single in 2004, You Got What I Need. After a couple of collaborations, she released her own album, in 2016. It debuted at number one on both the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums charts. The lead single, Torn, became her most successful to date. Before recording her second album, LeToya toured with Mary J Blige, as her opening act. The record, Lady Love, came out in 2009 and reached number 12 in the US. It failed to achieve the acclaim of its predecessor but it spawned a popular single, Regret, featuring Ludacris. La Toya’s latest album, Back 2 Life, is due for May 2017
