Gloria Estefan is a latin pop singer, songwriter, actress and businesswoman. She rose to fame in 1985 due to the massive, worldwide hit Conga, which became her signature song. In 1993 her album Mi Tierra topped the Billboard Latin Albums chart and gained 3 Grammy Awards (out of a total of 7). She made it into Songwriters Hall of Fame. Additionally, she was featured in the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” by both VH1 and Billboard.
Early Life & Miami Sound Machine
Gloria Estefan was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1957, as Gloria Fajardo. The family moved to Miami, Florida, after the 1959’s Cuban Revolution. Before pursuing a legendary solo career, Gloria was a member of Miami Sound Machine. The band was a mix of pop, disco and salsa, with a mostly local fan base. However, 1985, the group broke the mould with their 9th album, Primitive Love. It featured 3 top 10 hits, including the iconic Conga and went 4x Platinum.
Solo Success
In 1989, Gloria Estefan released her first solo album, Cuts Both Ways, which received numerous platinum certification. Notably, it spawned the single, Don’t Wanna Lose You, which peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. After suffering an auto accident, which required a lengthy recovery, Gloria came back with the 1991 album Into the Lights, which was an immense success. Two years later, the released her highest selling album, Mi Tierra. The record went diamond in both Spain and the US and generated several hits, most noteworthy the title track.
