Early Life

Grace Martine Tandon was born on October 24, 1998, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She grew up in the suburb of Mount Lebanon, where she also attended grade shool and high school. Due to her grandfather’s Indian origins, she chooses Daya as her stage name, the Hindu word for “compassion”. She enrolled in Christina Chirumbolo’s Accelerando Music Conservatory at 11, where she also met songwriter and producer Gino Barletta. The two work with her at their INSIDE ACCESS music camp, eventually inviting her to Los Angeles in 2015, to work on her original material. She is a multi-instrumentalist, starting with piano at age 3, converted to jazz piano at 11 and then continuing with guitar, ukulele, saxophone and flute.

“Don’t Let Me Down”

Daya’s career began with her first trip to Los Angels to work with Christina Chirumbolo and Gino Barletta, founders of INSIDE ACCESS by Accelerando, Brett McLaughlin, Britten Newbill and Noisecastle III at Paramount Recording Studios. During one of that writing season, her debut single “Hide Away” was wrote and recorded. Steve Zap from Z Entertainment heard the single and decided to help the singer promote herself, this resulted also in the creation of independent label Artbeatz, with Daya being there first artist signed. “Hide Away” was released on April 22, 2015, it was well-received online with major bloggers praising her. It peaked eventually at no. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. On October 2015 she released her debut EP “Daya” and her debut album “Sit Still, Look Pretty”, which featured the top charting singles “Hide Away” and ” Sit Still, Look Pretty”. Her major breakthrough will come, though, through her collaboration with The Chainsmokers on their song “Don’t Let Me Down” (2016). The song reached no.3 on the charts and achieved 4 x platinum. It boosted her career and earned her a Grammy for Best Dance Recording.
