Craig David Biography

Craig David is a British singer-songwriter and record producer, who managed to sell more than 15 million records worldwide.

Early Life

Craig Ashley David was born in Southampton, Hampshire on 5 May 1981. At 8 years he was brought up by his mother. David’s father was a bass musician and he started joining his father to local dance clubs.

Career Beginnings

Craig began his career as a DJ first which opened doors as he was meeting new producers. He wrote a song for the group Damage, called I’m Ready followed by Rewind, for which he provided lead vocals. The latter was a number 2 hit on the UK pop chart.

Breakthrough

Fill Me In was Craig’s first official single, released in 2000. It was a success and helped raise the sales of his debut album Born to Do It. A record deal with Atlantic exposed UK garage in the US thus gaining admiration from famous American artists. Craig won 3 MOBO awards and was nominated for 6 Brit awards. In 2002, he released his 2nd effort as Slicker Than Your Average. It spawned four Top 10 UK singles and was certified gold in the US. The adult contemporary R&B The Story Goes… was followed by the bolder LP Trust Me. In 2010 Craig issued the covers album Signed, Sealed, Delivered. After an international tour, he returned to the studio and collaborated with house duo Stereo Palma.

Comeback

In 2013 he was part of the TV show South African Idol as a judge. David went back to his DJ roots and took on weekly residency on the radio station Capital Xtra. Craig embarked on a major tour and issued When the Bassline Drops, a number 10 single on the UK chart. His sixth album Following My Intuition arrived in 2016 at number 1 on the UK Albums chart. It was David’s first number 1 since 2000’s Born to Do It.
