Chet Faker Biography

Born Nicholas James Murphy on 23 June 1988, Chet Faker is now known as Nick Murphy. He initially chose the name Chet Faker as a tribute to the jazz artist Chet Baker.

Early Career

He became popular through the power of the internet. His cover of the song “No Diggity” went viral in 2011. His first EP Thinking in Textures was highly praised. Faker’s songs were remixed by artists like MS MR and The Temper Trap. He also released the song “Melt” that featured the vocalist Kilo Kish.

First Album and Further Plans

After collaborating a few times with Flume they released the EP Lockjaw in 2012. Two years later, the Australian artist released his debut studio album Built on Glass. Its lead single was entitled “Talk is Cheap” and got named the number one song in the 2014 Triple J Hottest 100 countdown. Chet worked with DJ Marcus Marr and they released the EP Work (2015).

He declared that he needed to start making music with an alias because there was another Nick Murphy. This one was famous and people were confused between the two of them.  On 8 September 2016, he tweeted: “It’s been half a decade since I started releasing music as Chet Faker and all of you have been the driving force behind the music since“, followed by “The next record will be under my own name, Nick Murphy. Chet Faker will always be a part of the music. This is next.

Under his new stage name, the artist issued the songs “Fear Less” and “Stop Me (Stop You)” in 2016. He also featured in the Bonobo’s single “No Reason”
