Cage the Elephant Biography
Cage the Elephant is a Grammy awarded alternative and indie rock band from Kentucky. They are best known for the critically acclaimed 2008 single Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked, from their debut eponymous album. As years went by, their sound changed from funk and blues-influenced to punk rock-influenced, until the band found their musical identity. Their latest release is the 2017 single Cold Cold Cold.
Early Years & Breakthrough
In 2007, the group performed at the South by Southwest, consequently signing with Relentless Records. The young rockers performed as an opening act for Queens of the Stone Age and, shortly after, appeared on TV, on the show Later… with Jools Holland. Furthermore, they released their self-titled debut album, which peaked at number 59 on the Billboard 200 and number 6 on the US Hard Rock chart. The platinum-certified record was mostly boosted by the praise received by its single Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked. Notably, the song was included in the video game Borderlands. Moreover, Cage the Elephant appeared for the first time on the Late Show with David Letterman and performed at Lollapalooza.
2011 – Present
Thank You, Happy Birthday, the band’s second album, came out in 2011. It debuted at number 2 in the US and received positive reviews. Next up, Cafe the Elephant performed at Coachella and the Glastonbury Festival. Moreover, they supported Foo Fighters on their Wasting Light album tour. Finally, they earned number 1 on Rolling Stone’s poll for The Best New Artist of 2011.
In the summer of 2013, the single Come a Little Closer topped the Alternative and Adult Alternative Songs charts. It preceded the released of the band’s third album, Melophobia, which came out later that year to massive acclaim. Additionally, it spawned another hit, Cigarette Daydreams. After more festivals and promotional tours, including opening acts for Muse and The Black Keys, the band returned to the studio and recordedTell Me I’m Pretty. The album, which came out in late 2015, was preceded by the single Mess Around, which nominated the rock-related charts.
