Café Tacvba is a band from Ciudad Satélite, Mexico that gained popularity in the early 1990s. Their current line-up consists of members Rubén Albarrán, Emmanuel del Real, Enrique Rangel and Joselo Rangel. The group won in 2004 a Grammy Award for “Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album”.
Early Years
Previously called “Alicia ya no vive aqui”, a Scorsese tribute, the band was then inspired by a coffee shop from Mexico City’s Historic Center. They started as a garage band, heavily influenced by The Cure, The Clash, The Smiths, and Violent Femmes. Additionally, they mixed these influences with the Mexican culture. In 1989 they joined the music scene around El Hijo del Cuervo and caught the eye of producer Gustavo Santaolalla.
Breakthrough & Success
The group made their commercial debut in 1992, with their eponymous, first studio album. It spawned 5 singles, notably “Maria”, which received a Video of the Year nomination. Their next album came after 2 years, titled “Re”. It stood out due to the interesting mix of rock, punk and even metal. In 1996, Cafe Tacvba reached the Billboard 200 for the first time, with “Avalancha de Exitos” at number 12. 1999 and 2000’s albums, “Revés/Yo Soy” and “Cuatro Caminos” brought the band a couple of Grammy Awards. Moreover, “Sino”, released in 2008, gained 2 Latin Grammies. Most recently, Cafe Tacvba released their eighth studio album, “Jei Beibi“.
