Brooke Candy is an uprising American rapper and singer. She is known for featuring in the music video of Grimes’ Genesis. Her debut electropop album, Daddy Issues, produced by Sia, is about the come out. It was preceded by the hit single Living Out Loud, released in February 2017.
Early Life & Career
Brooke Candy grew up in California, in an LA suburb. Her parents, a paediatric nurse and a CFO at Hustler magazine, divorced when she was 8. She noticed how different their lifestyles were very different and she became intrigued by the “idea of duality”, ulteriorly remembering how she would go from the opulence of the Huster offices to her mother who was rather poor. For a while, Brooke had to work as a stripper in Hollywood, to make ends meet. She also worked as an intern for Rachel Zoe and met the photographer Larry Flynn who employed her to dress mannequins. During 2012 and 2013, Candy released 3 songs and videos, which became extremely popular on Youtube. Moreover, she was featured on Charli XCX’s song Cloud Aura.
First EP & Album
In 2014, she signed with RCA Records and released her first single, Opulence, co-written with Sia and produced by Diplo. The video featured transgender women, drag queens, and gay men. “We’re all freaks and outcasts, and this was meant to empower them,” commented Candy. Shortly after, she released her debut EP, Opulence, led by the title track. In 2015, she released another single, Rubber Band Stacks, which was included in the Madden NFL 16 video game. Furthermore, she released 4 promotional singles, Happy Days, Changes, Nasty and Paper or Plastic.
