Melanie Martinez is a young American pop singer. Additionally, she writes her own songs and directs her own videos. She is also passionate about photography. The world first heard her name when she participated in the popular tv show The Voice. Even though she didn’t win, she definitely became the most successful prodigy of The Voice. With the support of her already established fanbase, she released her first single, Dollhouse. In 2015, her first studio album, Cry Baby, jumped straight to number 6 on the Billboard 200. Her songs feature strong messages about family issues, body image, love. Her signature is her two-toned hair, inspired by character Cruella De Vil.
Dollhouse
Melanie wanted to be a singer ever since she was little. She has always been the artistic type and quite a loner. Another trait is the overly-emotional nature for which she was mocked as a child. Therefore, Melanie used art as the only means of self-expression she could master. In 2012, a young Melanie was accepted on the American TV show The Voice, after a stunning performance of Britney Spears’ Toxic. She chose Adam Levine as her coach. After the audience shockingly eliminated her, Melanie began working on an independent piece.
She released Dollhouse in 2014, based on the story of Edward Scissorhands, with the message: nothing is as it seems. The video, created entirely by herself, has over 100 million views on Youtube. During that same year, she released her debut EP, with the same name. The single Carousel appeared in a preview for American Horror Story: Freak Show. The song also ranked as number 9 on the Alternative Digital Songs chart.
Cry Baby
Melanie Martinez released her first studio album, Cry Baby, in the summer of 2015. Highly acclaimed, the album debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200. The first single, Pity Party, was immediately certified gold. Just one month after that, she released the second single, Soap, which reached number 12 on the Alternative Digital Songs chart, and number 16 on the Pop Digital Songs chart. Later that year, the young artist released a Christmas-themed song, Gingerbread Man.
2016 came with a series of personally directed music videos: a karaoke-like video for Alphabet Boy, a pair of double feature videos Soap + Training Wheels, and later Tag, You’re It + Milk and Cookies, a funny video for Pacify Her and a very controversial video for Mrs. Potato Head. Melanie even created her own fragrance called Cry Baby Perfume Milk. At the end of 2016 declared she has finished recording her upcoming album. She also revealed the album is based on the characters living in Cry Baby‘s neighborhood.
