Charlie Puth Biography

Charlie Puth is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. He began his career with acoustic covers uploaded to YouTube. He gained major expose with his collaboration with Wiz Khalifa on the tribute single “See You Again”, included in the “Furious 7” soundtrack as a tribute to the late Paul Walker.

Early Life

Born on December 2, 1991, as Charles Otto “Charlie” Puth Jr., in Rumson, New Jersey, he is the oldest son of three to parents Debra and Charles Puth. He is noted for his distinct scar on his right eyebrow, which he got as a two-year-old in a nearly fatal dog-bite incident. Charlie has perfect pitch, a rare auditory phenomenon that enables him to identify or recreate music, without a reference note. His mother introduced him to classical music and began teaching him the piano at age 4. He went on pursuing a musical education and eventually majored in music production and engineering in 2013 at the Berklee College of Music.

“Youtuber’s Life”

In September 2009, he started his own YouTube channel, “Charlies Vlogs”, posting comedy videos, acoustic covers and original compositions. In 2011 he won an online video competition and was signed by Ellen DeGeneres to her label, eleveneleven, after seeing his performance of Adele’s “Someone like You”. Later on, Puth started releasing more material, including promotional singles and EPs and also making apparitions at charitable festivals and on various media outlets. Puth was also credited with the production and writing of songs and jingles for fellow YouTube personalities. He wrote the theme songs for Shane Dawson, the Shaytards, Charles Trippy and group Our 2nd Life.

Breakthrough

In February 2015, Puth released his debut single “Marvin Gaye” In collaboration with Meghan Trainor. The single peaked at number 21 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and proved to be Charlie’s breakthrough in the industry. He wrote, co-produced, and was featured on a song with Wiz Khalifa, “See You Again”, a tribute to the late Paul Walker, included in the Furious 7 soundtrack. While Khalifa wrote the rap lyrics, the rest of the song has been credited to Puth. The song peaked at number one on the Hot 100 chart for 12 non-consecutive weeks. “See You Again” was nominated for multiple awards. On May 1, 2015, Puth released his EP, “Some Type of Love” which featured his “Marvin Gaye” single. His debut album, “Nine Track Mind”, was released on January 29, 2016. The album enjoyed a lot of acclaim and peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200. His second album single “One Call Away” (“Marvin Gaye” was also featured on his debut album as the first single) peaked at number 12 on the charts, while his third album single “We Don’t Talk Anymore” featuring Selena Gomez also proved to be a success, reaching Top 10 on the charts.
