Early Life
Lauren Keyana “Keke” Palmer was born in Harvey, Illinois on August 26, 1993, in a Christian family. Singing in the church choir, Palmer knew she wanted to perform by age 5.
Career Beginnings
Keke’s first acting role was in Barbershop 2: Back in Business in 2004. She and her family moved to California to focus on acting and singing alike. The following year Keke signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and released the debut single All My Girlz. In 2006 she performed for the first time in a stadium thanks to VH1’s Save the Music Battle. In 2007 she starred in Disney’s Jump In! and performed the soundtrack It’s My Turn Now. Her debut album So Uncool finally arrived later that year. In terms of acting, Keke won a NAACP Image Award for her lead role in Akeelah and the Bee.
Acting
In 2008 she was part of the Nickelodeon series True Jackson, interpreting the role of a teenaged fashion entrepreneur. Palmer starred in a variety of TV shows and films next such as the 2008 The Longshots with Ice Cube, the 2009 Shrink with Kevin Spacey, and the 2012 Joyful Noise with Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton. The soundtrack from the latter was a version of Man in the Mirror which was able to reach the Top Ten of the Christian and gospel digital songs charts. In animation, she provided voice work for the Winx Club franchise. Her latest acting gig was the 2015 Fox TV series Scream Queens.
Music
After that, Palmer decided to go back to music and focused entirely on that part of her career. The EP Lauren was released in 2016 under Island Records as well as an older unreleased album called Waited to Exhale. Lauren managed to bring Keke back to the R&B and Heatseekers album charts. In 2017 she released a nonfiction book/memoir called I Don’t Belong to You: Quiet the Noise and Find Your Voice. Keke revealed a new single Wind Up featured by Migos’ Quavo, on April 21, 2017.
