Goldfrapp is a British Grammy-awarded electronic duo from London, enclosing members Allison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory. They are mostly known for Oh La La“, their most successful single to date. The duo’s music is heavily inspired by nature and mythology, frequently depicting surreal stories.
Early Years
During her early twenties, Alison Goldfrapp performed with the Dance Company Catherine Massin. Furthermore, she studied Fine Art and began creating her own music. She met Will in 1999 and the two connected instantly. Subsequently, they released their first single, Lovely Head. In 2000, they released Felt Mountain, their debut album, through Mute Records. It received very positive reviews and peaked at number 57 in the UK. The lyrics, written by Alison, referred to abstract tales from movies of from her own childhood. In 2003, the duo released Black Cherry, a Platinum-certified, glam rock influenced record more focused on dance music. Moreover, it marked Goldfrapp’s breakthrough on the US market.
“Supernature” & Recent Years
In 2005, Goldfrapp’s third album, Supernature, came out. It debuted at number 2 in the UK, received a Platinum certification and a Grammy nomination. Furthermore, it spawned the band’s iconic hit Ooh La La. The “sulky, sexual and a bit ambiguous” single, as described by Allison, topped the US Hot Dance Club Play chart. It album spawned another top 10 singles, Number 1. Three years later, the Goldfrapp released another Platinum-certified album, Seventh Tree. It generated four singles, notably A&E and Caravan Girl. The electronic duo released 3 more top 10 albums: Head First (2010), Tales of Us (2013) and Silver Eye (2017).
