Early Years

The group was founded by Adam Granduciel and Kurt Vile in 2005. Since then, the band had members coming and going. They released the Barrel of Batteries EP in 2008. In the same year, The War on Drugs issued the album Wagonwheel Blues. This album was supported by an European tour. When the tour ended, Kurt Vile parted ways with the band.

Adam Granduciel always struggled with anxiety and panic attacks. “Who am I connecting with? I don’t want to leave my house, yet I want to connect with stadiums? I want to play huge festivals, but the idea of standing in line at a Whole Foods sends me over the edge?” He asked himself these questions in an interview with Pitchfork.

Further Career

Slave Ambient issued in 2011. Combining indie, psychedelic and shoegaze elements, it was rated 82/100 by Metacritic. It contained the singles “Baby Missiles”, “Come to the City” and “Best Night.”

The War on Drugs released the album Lost in the Dream in 2014. It raised even higher than its predecessor, scoring an 86/100 rating. The album charted on 26 on the US Billboard 200 and on 4 on the UK Independent Albums chart.
