The Pussycat Dolls Biography

The Pussycat Dolls was an American girl group, formed initially in 1995 as a burlesque ensemble. In 2003, the remaining six girls turned to music and gained worldwide fame. They released two albums with numerous popular singles, until 2009. The group broke up due to the lead singer, Nicole Scherzinger, eclipsing the other members. Billboard Magazine declared the Pussycat Dolls as the 80th most successful musical act of the 2000s.

Burlesque Phase

In 1995, the choreographer Robin Antin thought about creating a modern burlesque troupe. Equipped with 50 and 60s hits and with lingerie or pin-up costumes, the group began dancing at the Viper Room. Until their breakthrough, the Pussycat Dolls suffered many line-up changes and featured in magazines like Playboy and Maxim. In 2003, Antin began transforming the group into a veritable music band. By 2004, the group had reached its final line-up and released a couple of songs, notably the cover of Sway.

Commercial Success

In 2005, the band’s debut album, PCD, received massive acclaim. It spawned 6 successful singles, most noteworthy, Don’t Cha, Stickwitu, Buttons and Beep (with will.i.am). All of them were platinum-certified and conquered charts from all over the world. Additionally, the first two singles peaked at number 1 in the UK. The remix version of Buttons, featuring Snoop Dogg, became an international hit, reaching at least top 5 everywhere.

After Carmit’s departure and a period of hiatus, the girls released their second studio album. The 2008, Doll Domination failed to reach the glory of its predecessor. However, it spawned 3 platinum singles, When I Grow Up, which peaked at number 9 on the Hot 100, I Hate This Part and Jai Ho. The latter was included in the soundtrack of the Oscar-awarded movie Slumdog Millionaire.
