blackbear Biography

Matthew Tyler Musto, known by his stage name blackbear, is an American hip hop artist, singer, songwriter and producer. He collaborated with many major names from the industry. Most noteworthy, he wrote Justin Bieber’s hit song Boyfriend.

Early Life & Career

Musto was born in 1990 in Florida. He was always interested in singing and writing, thus grew up playing in garage bands. In 2008, the young artist caught the eye of talent manager Tabari Francis, who sent him to Ne-Yo’s Compound Entertainment. After two years of improving his sound and songwriting skills, he collaborated with Justin Bieber, on the single Boyfriend. It reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and boosted blackbear’s image. Therefore, in 2012, he released Sex, the Mixtape.

Breakthrough & Success

In 2015, blackbeer released his debut studio album, Deadroses, to critical acclaim. The lead single, Idfc, reached the Billboard R&B Hot 100. The second single, 90210, a collaboration with G-Eazy gained over 11 million streams on Soundcloud. Following up on that success, he released a second album, Help, during the same year. Most noteworthy, it spawned the single Slide Thru, which became popular on Youtube due to its whimsical and colourful video.

In 2016, he released two EPs, Drink Bleach and Cashmere Noose. The latter ranked as number 6 on Itunes. Furthermore, he featured in Olivia O’Brien’s single Root Beer Float. In 2017, blackbear released Mansionz, a collaborative project with Mike Posner. Currently, he is working on his upcoming solo album, Digital Druglord, from which he already revealed 3 songs.
