Panic! at the Disco Biography

Panic! at the Disco is an American pop-rock band formed in 2004. Their debut album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, with I Write Sins Not Tragedies as its lead single, was an immense success. The second album, Pretty Odd, was very further from its predecessor’s sound and that created issues within the band. Additionally, it led to changes in the band’s line-up.The third album, Vices & Virtues, did not really stand out. However, the band made a recovery with their next album, Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!. Their latest single, Emperor’s New Clothes, from Death of a Bachelor (2016) received critical acclaim.

A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out

Panic! at the Disco started off as a blink-182 cover band. During their demos period, L.A. was full of death-metal groups so their pop-rock sound stood out easily. They reached out to Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy who liked them and signed them to his label Decaydance Records. Pete also took care of marketing the band. Among others, he used to wear a shirt that said, Pete! at the Disco.

After a few exhausting months, the pop-rock band released their first album. It was split into two halves, with different musical influences. A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out reached several Billboard charts, topping the Heartseekers. The album contains themes like marriage, adultery, mental health, alcoholism, and prostitution. Moreover, the lyrics are inspired by Chuck Palahniuk’s writing. Actually, the song title The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage is a quote by Palahniuk. Time to Dance depicts the plot of Invisible Monsters and includes quotes as well. The lead single, I Write Sins Not Tragedies, was certified Platinum and the afferent music video won MTV’s Video of the Year award. Overall, in only one year, Panic! at the Disco went from being an opening act to being a headliner.

Pretty Odd – New Perspective – Vices & Virtues

The second album, Pretty Odd, came in 2008. It had a rather mild sound compared to the previous one. Even so, it debuted at number 2 on the US Billboard 200 and even competed with A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out in terms of commercial success. The shows changed as well, going from dark themes to floral and peaceful elements. This discrepancy created a schism as some members did not embrace change.

Therefore, only two members were left in 2010. By themselves, they recorded New Perspective, a song featured on the soundtrack of the thriller Jennifer’s Body. In 2011, after the band was completed with 2 more members, Panic! at the Disco released another album – Vices & Virtues. With The Ballad of Mona Lisa as lead, the album received positive reviews. However, lead singer Urie was still not completely satisfied with their style. Another noteworthy event from 2011 was releasing Mercenary, for the video game Batman: Arkham City.

Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! – Death of a Bachelor

The band’s fourth album, Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!, became their second No. 2 album on the US Billboard 200. It received positive reviews but did not spawn any worldwide hits. Two years later, though, their out of the blue release of Hallelujah (2015) made Panic! at the Disco an international sensation again. The single reached the Billboard Hot 100. One month later, Urie announced the release of their latest album, Death of a Bachelor. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and many of its tracks made it into charts. After two moderately popular singles, Emperor’s New Clothes conquered the internet with it’s controversial, dark video. Additionally, in 2016, the group released a cover of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody for the soundtrack of blockbuster movie Suicide Squad.
